BLÜDWYRM (SLUDGE/DOOM, REVIEW) - THE BLISSFUL SLEEP OF IGNORANCE (RELEASE JUNE 5TH, ROAD TO MASOCHIST)

So, Bog was sat around on the bog bike wondering what to do, he’d just behaved normally on the previous review, and he needed to hear something to get that muck mongrel blood pumping through his veins, alleyway rat style, but then, the bog spat BLÜDWYRM, and Bog’s face gasped with joy.

1. Preacher Of My Own Demise is the opening track with a thick fat ass riff like a brick necklace, pulling someone down to the earth. The signature riff is suffocating, oppressive, and sucks the air out of the room. Wonderful announcement to say it’s nasty ass music time and Bog jumped around in the bog splashing puddles of chemical dirt everywhere.

2.26 mins has a vocal drop to be joined by a drum drop around 2.29 mins to take us into a riff, which shatters, completely shatters. It’s the kind of villainous riff that Bog would find motivating at slimming club when some frustrated f*cked off Nana cuts into a cake and says ‘This is how much you need to lose this week, if you still want your shitty gold fridge magnets!

The mastering is good and the drums match the pace of the guitar with layering as tight as Bog’s clenching cheeks, so very solidly put together.

2. Isolate - Oh, oh, Bogs, you need to get on this one! Turn it up loud, loud! The vocals are on point here. This has Bog f*cking amped. It’s p*ssed off, it’s been disturbed, woken up by some annoying summertime bliss wack shit. Nasty, a word Bog is going to use a lot, because this is just nasty. Bog is going to paint the picture, bog style, and say how vile, obliteratively retching Isolate is. Imagine someone with bronchitis eating a sandwich of mould ridden socks coated in piss with a sprinkling of BBQ sauce that is 12 months old, consequently, the aftershocks are severe. What a gut wrenching wonderfully sick eviscerating example of musical sorcery. This is nasty ass sludge at its vilest.

The intro, 25 seconds of a down tuned lo-fi grime riff, which is sewer af partnered with a drum beat sounding like an ominous dread march. Super interesting way to set up the build for the flow, which is triggered by the drums again with a double tap that steps it up.

Composition is tight, drums, riffs, vocals, arranged nicely with good atmosphere. Leo’s bass outside of his vocals crush like a coach dropped from the mountain of scrap. Some nice repeating riff sequences near the end before the fade out outro. Slays!

3. The Vultures is another pure gutter offering. Isolate might be a little viler, but Bog feels The Vultures is a good example of a wider musical spectrum. It’s still vile, still nasty, there is a bang your head and swing your hair around to depart dandruff section, which is good, but Bog enjoyed the change ups and flows. One to get the crowd popping off and slamming around.

The introduction starts with a solid opening riff, quickly transitioning into a mid-paced tempo with angry vocals, and takes us back to a patient sinister build featuring the dual assault of the germ ridden bass and lead grimy riffs. They transition back to the mid pace tempo, then 2.35 mins ish there is a sick af solo, which resulted in Bog just saying; ‘f it, am up and swinging my head around.’ A highly enjoyable track with a wider structural arc behind the music. Sets the scene, but also hooks in the listener. Also like the fade out with the riff tone extended.

4. Pesticides is another interesting angle with further examples of BLÜDWYRM’s wide reaching and thoughtful arc concerning the presentation. Pesticides is the longest track and the doomiest from the EP, but that said, it’s still as sludgy as the bog mud tracks when the rain falls. Around 2.41 mins in, the drums with the thick down tuned riff are delightful. Pesticides contains a level of atmosphere from the subtle light introduction to nut cracking riffs, tight drums, and vocals appearing nicely. Builds again near the end of track with another good fade to close the EP. It’s post-apocalyptic with a light, but tone setting feel, and the drum beat is really cool on the start, which helps to bring this to fruition, then the lead guitar and vocals arrive with constant bass (played by the vocalist).

Rating: For a 4 track EP, there is a lot on offer with the range and alternative presentations within the grime. It’s nasty, really nasty, but also each track differs. The core feel and sound are there, but the tracks don’t bleed into each other, nor does it sound like one long f off track. The sequencing, audio, and change ups take us in and out of each section in a track’s flow cleanly. There are sullied dirt stained riffs that slay with vocals sounding like one of Bog’s p*ssed off buddies from the murky depths. Leo’s bass is sick and is a constant undercurrent, adding further nasty feels.

Those who prefer constant brutality and insane speeds may not feel the EP, BUT for those who can appreciate the dirt, the muck, and the lava, then The Blissful Sleep Of Ignorance will take hold of your ears. Bog is heading out, bog bike ready, and those special sandwiches mentioned earlier are ready in buckets, soaking further to be delivered to special outlets. The Blissful Sleep Of Ignorance is a magical engineered journey into a world of f*cking rancid wall paper in a shitty squalid apartment that has light bulbs with boogers hanging off them. It’s vile, but it’s so nice to listen to!
