BOG LORE - THE PYRE RUST RIDE!!! PT1!!!
Hunrok weaved through the narrow corners, swerving left to right, maintaining the line, and taking care not to go too wide.
The riders behind followed and churned up the dust from the ground as their wheels cut through the thick brown mud and sand.
Hunrok glanced back; the formation was holding, the main line was fine, and visibility was clear. Despite the rocky conditions, it was a steady ride, and no one had fallen off their bikes.
A rock crashed to the ground to Hunrok's right, narrowly missing his front wheel. He leaned to the left, manoeuvring around it, then quickly adjusted his balance to return to the center line. There was no slowing down, no time to stop. The elements themselves were as much of an enemy as The Gate and their collaborators.
"Rock!" shouted Hunrok on comms, alerting the riders behind him. He didn't want a pile up or to waste time on repairs that could be avoided. Sure, the ride was dangerous, but it wasn't anything the dirt riders were not used to. That said, riding the dirt, whether on a track or on The Reaping Sands mountain pass, always carried a risk.
Hunrok raced forward with his head down. The pass took another sharp corner, causing him this time to turn and steer his bike to the left again. The dust kicked up by their speed was making it problematic, but they had to keep going.
"Tight left!" shouted Hunrok again. The riders turned in formation, matching Hunrok's movement. All of them leaned into the turn, using their hips while they steered the bikes to the left and weighted the outside pegs. The wheels spun, carving up the ground and throwing a heavy roost into the air.
The braap of the exhaust sounds echoed like a mechanical symphony of farts. The gears dropped as they braked, then clicked up again as they cleared the corner.
The riders' bodies were upright and they maintained a comfortable, high pace after clearing the tight corner. Hunrok glanced back over his shoulder and raised his hand to give the column a thumbs up.
He was more nervous than they realized and worried about how many they would lose on the mountain pass. Hunrok understood the urgency. Bog had dispatched them days ago. First the buggies, then The Pyre Rust. Hunrok could still see some of the tracks from them. Their grimy artwork painted the ground before the wind and rain would wash it away later.
So far, the weather had remained relatively calm. It was hot and humid, uncomfortable, but thankfully, there was no headwind.
Hunrok had decided after they had cleared the outer sands that it was best to race through in waves. He pondered how long it must have taken the buggies, but it was achievable—just a slower and arduous climb, then a sprint through the pass.
He looked ahead; he couldn't quite see what was beyond the horizon. The exhausts echoed through the pass. On Hunrok's flanks were tall walls of rock as dirty as the ground they raced across.
"Maintain the line, long straight, watch out for sudden turns," said Hunrok.
The riders raced forward, maintaining speed and holding the line. Weaving in and out of the debris, and scrubbing over the small mounds that appeared.
Hunrok released the throttle, shifting down the gears with his foot on the shifter lever—not stopping, but dropping to a cruising speed. Up ahead and coming into view was another large chicane arcing wide. Hunrok thought drifting on a speedway bike would be ideal, but that was for another time, another world, and it was not this world.
At that moment, he noticed water appearing on his visor. It wasn't condensation on the inside from hours of riding. Another droplet, then another. The water ran down his visor more frequently. Hunrok raised his head. Dark clouds and rain.
"Rain!" shouted Hunrok on comms.
It was what he dreaded in a pass like this. The rain would turn the dirt and mud into a mucky river. They would slide around, which wasn't good in a confined space. If they made it through the coming chicane, then they would need to change up their riding style to get through. The potential for smashes and pile-ups just increased exponentially.
"Follow my lead, but this will be a long ride. Tough and slow. If you fall off or smash, stop, help, and rendezvous on the other side. This is just the first part. Try to hold the line. Ride the line!" shouted Hunrok.
Hunrok approached the chicane, tension and nerves in his grip. His bike slipped a little. The back wheel stepped out, causing the bike to shake and move side to side. Hunrok tightened his grip and controlled the bike, but the sudden jolt forced him wide. Hunrok leaned a little over to his right, using his body weight and core to steer the bike back to the inside line, then accelerated out into a short straight.
