BOG REVIEW - "MANGLED CARPENTER" (EXTREME METAL) - 'BETWEEN BLOOD AND SILENCE' (RELEASED JULY 17TH, ROTTWEILER RECORDS & BROKEN CURFEW RECORDS)


Disclaimer: Bog is dealing with extreme weather patterns in the Bog Lands, so our usual deep dive approach is on the shelf until the storms subside. 

1. Between Blood and Silence - The title track and opening is an angry heavy death grind attack with hardcore riffing, and industrial overtones. It's an interesting combination, which features on other tracks and gives Mangled Carpenter a distinct signature tone.

Bog's earphones detected the audio was a little off on the drum programming with the tin-ish sound, but it's only really noticeable on the breakdown riffs, and is more in the background. No big issue, during a live set tweaking the EQ or lowering the drums on the mixer could resolve this issue. 

2. Carved – Has that post-apoc atmosphere with dark industrial overtones and death groove, grind, and the darker side of nu metal featuring hardcore breakdown riffs, and harsh vocals, but you can understand them. The lyrics are good and thought out, and caught Bog’s ear. 

3. The Absence of Light – Good blast beats with death grind and groove, and some nu metal akin to the heavier/darker side. Good change up in pace on a later section. Probably one of the most aggressive tracks on the EP. 

4. Down, Down, to Goblin Town – One of Bog's picks from the EP along with Carved. Good lead and backing vocals, which interestingly sound like a goblin, and add to the immersion. Consistent drum programming with nice guitar lines and tone. 

Bog can hear groove metal with a little mid-paced death, and the darker side of nu-metal again. Very fun and enjoyable track with audio effects in the latter part sounding like the goblins in Goblin Town are dancing.

Someone once warned Bog about goblins running through your backyard and that you will be shivering with fright, but that’s a story for another time. 

5. Terminate Damnation (Mortification cover) – Epic track with memorable riffs, so this is interesting to hear. A solid cover, not sure if Bog prefers the original, but it does carry the feel from the other tracks, so that’s a positive for the trademark sound of Mangled Carpenter. A little industrial edge bleeding through, which is pretty cool.

6. Short Sharp Shock – Direct solid sonic assault in a death grindy track with some of those industrial-ish tones bleeding through again. It's an aggressive close to the EP in the vein of the angry intro. It works because it grabs hold of the ears and reminds folks of the intense heaviness throughout the tracks.

Bog’s Thoughts: When Bog isn’t suffering severe storms, he hopes to scribe more about Mangled Carpenter and Seth Metoyer's music at some point. 

Bog has followed Mangled Carpenter and Seth's music for a while, and it’s not all in one box. Referring to tracks such as Flicker of September, which was a solo release possibly featured on a compilation from Rottweiler Records.

Between Blood And Silence has a wide arc of styles covering death, groove, death grind, hardcore riffing for the breakdowns, blast beats with drum programming, harsh vocals, yet still delivered so listeners can understand the lyrics. There are also layers of industrial and the darker side of nu-metal that feature in the tracks.

Bog appreciated this as it gives the EP its own feel and sound, and it was cool to hear how the guys blended the influences together. 

Favorite tracks were Carved and Down, Down, to Goblin Town. 

It would be cool to hear Mangled Carpenter do a new full length expanding those influences further. Bog awaits with eagerness for that to happen so he can discuss and break down what he hears.

So, multi-genre, wide influences, and some good lyrical content. Immersive and would be cool for live sets too. Between Blood And Silence is definitely an EP if you enjoy listening to extreme metal containing far reaching influences for healthy appetites y'all!

BEAUTIFUL FREAKIN' WEIRDO: ZAP THE FEAR (INDUSTRIAL METAL, RELEASED INDEPENDENTLY 08/08/25, REVIEW)

Beautiful Freakin' Weirdo released Zap The Fear a few months ago and is an Industrial Metal offering featuring 3 high octane tracks through a lyrical, and musical journey about real world hell and the psychological connection to it. I am Fire   has an upbeat rhythm with a consistent pace designed to keep people on the dance floor. It's kind of a mix between Static X with Rob Zombie with a slow acid techno hook coming around 2 minutes in. The vocals deliver the chorus effectively with a catchy riff serving as the signature for the song along with a fast paced beat for the drums with fairly high BPM. Psychohead continues on from the fast opening to maintain the pace and not allow people to leave the dancefloor. The drums are particularly good on this track, and support the guitars and vocals nicely. THE HANGMAN'S DAUGHTER - SAMPLER (POST PUNK, RELEASED INDEPENDENTLY, AUG 29TH, REVIEW)

On the first listen, Bog didn't really feel the sampler, but it has grown on Bog, and it does turn into an infectious piece of music. It was an interesting journey with The Hangman's Daughter, and Bog likes it when something completely flips him from his initial reaction.  With that said, the sampler is super chill, so for those expecting ultra heavy music, or something that is going to make you shiver furiously, then this might not be for you, but if you can give it a chance, and appreciate relaxing, but catchy melodies, then The Hangman's Daughter would be an artist Bog recommends. There are other influences outside of the obvious goth vocals and bands like The Cure, such as horror punk (Bog could hear it on Serafina Who Knows).
