(BOG REVIEW) - "NIHILO" - "ABYSS" (DEATH METAL, RELEASED NOVEMBER 3RD, XTREEM MUSIC)
Bog was going to ask Santa if he could drop something off in the muck pools to allow him a nice cuss to cleanse after speaking too cleanly for excessive periods.
Thankfully, Nihilo arrived in the Bog Lands with their crushing, all-out, direct thunder sky wheels of aggression to answer this problem.
1. Primal Instinct – An exciting straight-up death metal track with ferocity, aggressive riffing, and intense drumming patterns to anchor the vibe firmly in as the opener for what is to come.
Vocal strength is already shining to highlight early impressions Bog is hearing within the music. Abyss already sounds like a finely crafted album with strong structures. Audio levels are excellent and very well balanced.
2. Voidbound - Starts with an aggressive blast beat attack and Bog can hear the hardcore mixed with a little black, thrash, and then of course death metal. The hardcore vibe adds that raw injection and is like when you are on a bike, hit another gear, and just boom.
The track structure caught Bog's ears, and the above influences have been arranged tightly to combine to present an almost crust punk-infused dynamic. Tbh, Bog wanted to jump through a wall and shout, "am a f*-c-k-i-n-g master decorator." Certainly, a track for doing intense DIY for sure.
Bog is hungry to hear more, so let's ride over to track 3.
3. Impending Doom - Is classic straight up death with sick on-point drums matched with solid AF transitions. The change ups to fast, intense pieces also carry a little blackened rawness.
Bog likes this band, they vibe as like, "We are just going to do what we do and hit this shit, f*-c-k being pigeon holed, we will take influences from what we like, and make some nasty shit." Bog would like another plate of this sonic close quarters assault fest please!
Impending Doom is definitely an enjoyable track full of high-octane fuel and Bog would happily ride around the dirt tracks while listening.
4. Dishonored Death - After a brief intro it's swing a head of hair around whipping shelves down and spreading flaky skin through the air. High level, good windmilling shit for pulling mean faces too like ya just eat Aunt Maggie's shitty roast that tastes like piss.
Excellent drums and riffs again. The vocalist syncs well and the track arrangement is very solid.
5. Inherent Cracks - Is another interestingly structured track and is the only time we experience a respite in pace. That said, there are some brief, fast drumming patterns that made Bog feel like he was straying too near clean water, and a sudden wave hits, then you jump back shouting, "oooo, ya f*c-k-", so it's evidence of how stimulating those sequences are.
6. Veil of Nothing - Features another good blast beaty intro of f*-c-k- off artillery rounds specials after the opening riffs. The vocalist caught Bog's ears again, because it is impressive to see the enthusiastic fury is still present with no slacking. So, it's not like a boxing ring announcer when they sometimes go hoarse and are like enduring 10 minutes of coughing to finish the sentence: "live, from f*c-k-i-n-g give me a moment."
The track also has a very nice cinematic outro to add a kind of sci-fi, horror, fantasy, and all that shit sick vibe. Bog liked this effect; some folks may want the carnage to ensue, but it's a cool way to alert the ears with a pause—they pay attention, then the next track hooks the crowd back on Nihilo's sonic punishment.
7. Suffocating Silence - Another track hitting as hard as the creepy f*-c-k-e-r 3I Assless that was flying around in space a while back, and dropping shit off on planets, which might bite us on the ass in a few whatever years.
Musically, Suffocating Silence hits like that with solid AF solos, tight transitions, which reinforces the feeling Nihilo just went for it, and played hard.
The mixing, mastering, and frequencies are also good on Suffocating Silence.
8. Fractured - Oh Stenchers, this is a sick angry track with a p*-s-s-e-d- intro—really p*-s-s-e-d.
The solos are nice, good riff structure, and another mostly all-out sonic close quarters assault.
There are also some sick breakdown sequences with the riffs, before dropping back to the vocals. The sync was cool and Bog appreciated this on the track with go and drop. Very tight.
9. Roots in Bone - The same ish as Fractured with another swingy the head around vibe at the start, then followed by a maintained slower pace, which transitions to an extreme section, which is repeated in sequence through the track.
There is another beautiful cinematic outro, which shows there is more to the band behind the musical savagery, because they do close out tracks mega with how they have been arranged and placed.
It makes for an interesting listen and Bog's ears felt both terrified and soothed at the same time. It is like some f*-c-k-e-r scaring you into a wardrobe, but also providing a comfort blanket.
10. Enter the Abyss - The track has a mega build into the primal, visceral feel, and is another tightly structured package. The riffs are sick, the drumming patterns are particularly angry with good vocal drops.
The outro riff into the clean fade also was a sick touch that was synced very well, and finished the album effectively.
BOG'S THOUGHTS:
Bog appreciated Nihilo for their brutal dynamics and the differing influences, and elements.
The production is impressive with balanced audio. The instrumentation is smooth, synced, and the transitions are sick AF.
Bog wants to draw attention to the vocalist. The breathing control and aggression maintenance stand out, and match the flow of the music.
Combine this with how the tracks
are layered and structured, and it's no surprise Bog thinks the band is the ideal soundtrack for Calcio Storico.

It's hook worthy death metal that you don't want to go run for a piss while listening and miss something.
