(BOG REVIEW) "FRIGHT NIGHT" (RELEASED 1985, COMEDY HORROR/HORROR)

"Fright Night," not to be confused with "Shite Night," which was Bog’s journey into 21st-century toilets, is a cult classic comedy horror movie. One of the Stenchers was asking Bog to look at comedy horror, whether deliberate or unintentional, so Bog is sharing some mud packets from recommendations about mucky-related movies in due course. Bog will deep-dive "Fright Night" at a later date, but for now, it’s a fast mud spray special to go.

THE SONIC ALLEYWAY BLUES

Bog will examine the music closely later, but for now, it's mostly sick synth to enjoy taking long walks down alleyways. Jerry Dandrige, the vampire antagonist who is always eating an apple, does a little alleyway walking, so maybe it's a thing where vamps hear synth in alleys that calls them to walk down the foggy, piss-stained corridors with shitty lettering displayed all over the walls that says, “Jim was here for 5 mins.”

THE PLOT (OBSESSED HE MUST BE THE APPLE MAN VS. APPLE VAMP)

Jerry "Apple-Fruit Ambassador" Dandrige moves in next door. He’s a bit of a creepy dude who likes going out to play bingo in the middle of the night. Charlie realizes Jerry doesn’t want to chat with him about the delights of Venetian ice cream and quickly drops plant grower fuel in his pants. They have an amusing early meeting, and Charlie becomes determined to tell everyone about Jerry’s fangs penetrating apples and late-night bingo activity.
Consequently, Uncle Jerry tries to warmly persuade Charlie to stop poking around, but it only makes the teenager more determined. It leads to an eventual confrontation with theatrical antics to sell each scene very comically.

BOG'S SONIC & VISUAL VERDICT
  • The Score: Brad Fiedel composed the score, and it's pretty sick. There are good synth lines, and he also did "T2," which is known for other solid synthesque music.
  • The Atmosphere: Good mist effect around Apple Jerry’s house.
  • The Reluctant Hunter: Peter Vincent is good as the TV actor who realizes vamps are real and shits his pants. He is the reluctant hunter who is struggling with wetting himself every 30 seconds.
  • Jerry's Vamp Vocals: Jerry near the end demonstrates again why he was the foundation for dark neo-folk, narrative spoken word black/death metal with his pre-Star Wars Episode 3 “Noooooooooooo-like voice.”
  • The FX: The effects are obviously practical and give "Fright Night" an atmosphere and a real-ish vibe.

QUICK BREAKDOWN
Entertaining, cheese, funny, a solid atmosphere, a good score, and subtle backing samples. The end-credits scene with the eyes at Apple Manor looking back at Charlie is a mega close to the movie.
DEEP DIVE TO COME.
